UMSIZI EMPOWERS THE NEXT GENERATION OF AFRICANS TO BUILD STRONGER FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES.

Umsizi means to assist in Zulu. Our purpose is to support young Africans by connecting them to pathways to employability, ensuring that they have economic opportunities and are treated with dignity every step of the way.

Since 2005, Umsizi founders have been partnering with African-led entities by providing financial and professional resources. As we look to the future, our focus is more clearly on supporting locally-led organizations, who we believe are best positioned to drive ecosystem solutions. In addition, Umsizi prioritizes organizations that help youth develop income and agency.

IMPACT IN ACTION

We approach our partners with an open mind and fill the gaps that they see. As human talent is the most fundamental element of change, we support the development of networks, ecosystems, and early-stage social entrepreneurs.

See below for examples of our work with partners.

Employability Focus

Employment and income generation for young people is a critical issue in Africa and requires a multi-faceted approach. Because significant youth employment cannot be achieved by organizations working in isolation, we focus on supporting networks of stakeholders who are working to create pathways to employment. Ideally, employers, government, civil society, and youth come together to define barriers, set aspirations, and hold each other accountable to their common purpose.

The challenges that these young leaders face are vast and complex, ranging from inadequate education systems to limited job opportunities in formal sectors. Yet, despite these challenges, there are successful examples of programs that are making a real difference in the lives of young people.
